FACA April 2022 – “Fulbright Scholar to Finland” – Emma Mulhern an alumni of University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Carlson School of Management tells us about her university studies in Finland as a Fulbright – LUT Graduate Award Grantee scholar.
FACA March 2022 – “Finnish Cooking and Baking” – Beatrice Ojakangas is the award winning author of 31 cookbooks, inducted in 2005 into the James Beard Cookbook Hall of Fame. Beatrice bakes a salmon casserole and a spontaneous leipä (bread).

FACA January 2022 – “Salolampi – Finnish Village” – Amy ‘Iida’ Tervola Hultberg, Dean of Salolampi, the Finnish language village at the Concordia Language Villages. Many Finnish Americans have fond memories of summers spent in the miniature Finland built on the shores of Turtle River Lake – where the buildings, food, sauna, and even your new name are Finnish!
FACA October 2021 – “Finn/Ojibwe” – Dr. Arne Väiniö, was born to a Finnish father and an Ojibwe mother, one of seven children. We regret to inform that due to technical difficulties because of an electrical outage, the video doesn’t start until the end of Dr. Arne’s powerful presentation and thankfully includes a Q and A portion.

FACA May 2021 – “A Year In Sápmi” Part 1 – Kristiina Jomppanen, a language teacher, who has previously taught Finnish at University of Minnesota and University of Edinburgh. Kristiina is both Finnish and Sámi but grew up outside of Sápmi.

FACA April 2021 – “Väinämöinen goes Instagram”. Hanna-Ilona Härmävaara is a visiting lecturer of Finnish language and culture at the University of Washington, sent by the Finnish National Agency for Education.
FACA March 2021 – A panel discussion with guests from Virginia, Menagha, Finland, and Faribault discussing the hotly-contested origin and history of St. Urho’s Day in Minnesota.
FACA January 2021 – “The Kalevala, Mythology, Magic and Ritual”. Mr Frog is specialist in both Finno-Karelian and Old Norse (Scandinavian) mythologies and poetries. To watch Mr Frog’s presentation, please contact Cristina Youngren at cy.elemental@gmail.com for access.
FACA December 2020 – “Virtual Joulu” Magical Finnish Christmas together with Finnsource/Finlandia Foundation.
FACA November 2020 – “The Kvens of Norway”. Daniel (Karvonen) Haataja is senior lecturer in Finnish and linguistics at the University of Minnesota, and spent the last two years teaching Finnish at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø.
FACA October 2020 – Andrew Nestingen of the UW Seattle presents a thoughtful and in-depth look at the films and style of famed Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki.
FACA September 2020 – “U.S. Immigration — Challenges of the Past and Present”.
Elaine Kumpula currently serves as Finland’s Honorary Consul in Minneapolis where she assists Finnish citizens living in the southern half of Minnesota and South Dakota.

FACA Event Cancellation Policy:

If St. Paul public schools are cancelled due to bad weather, then a FACA event scheduled for that day will also be cancelled. FACA members may contact any Board member if they have a question about whether an event is cancelled.
